Noelliste got the idea to launch BGLH Marketplace on November 24th, 2014. Previously known for her site Black Girl with Long Hair, Noelliste realized “that shea, mango and cocoa butter are miracle ingredients with an endless list of health and beauty benefits for hair and skin, and that her readers had repeated complaints about lack of consistent access to them.”
She also noticed that many of her readers spoke about the ineffectiveness and toxicity of nonorganic products. When Noelliste opened shop she began selling raw shea butter from her blog, making it easier for her readers to have access.
The blogger was then inspired to create an “ice cream shop for the body” where customers could select from a variety of all-natural whipped and scented mango, shea and cocoa jars of butter to incorporate into their skin and hair routine.
Noelliste began to study pastry techniques and learned how to operate commercial grade mixers to whip the butters into a soft and fluffy consistency that would melt into the hair/skin. In fact, she dedicates six days a week to producing her butters and soaps; offering up to 27 types of butters and imported African black soap.
In the future, the beauty specialist intends on adding facial moisturizers and shampoo options.
Noelliste’s first physical store was opened in 2017 in Bed-Stuy. A year after her grand opening, she’s noticed a spike in the neighborhood’s foot traffic.
She also recalls working with Tri State Commercial in her hunt for a storefront and describes the transaction as a pleasant experience.
