Construction has begun on a $36 million transformation of the Eastern Parkway Library in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the groundbreaking for the project, which will expand public space at the century-old Brooklyn Public Library branch by more than 50 percent while preserving its historic Classical Revival architecture. The project is led by the city's Department of Design and Construction and is expected to be completed in summer 2028.

Originally built in 1914 as part of a $5.2 million gift from Andrew Carnegie, the limestone-clad library will gain a new 13,400-square-foot, three-story wing along Schenectady Avenue, designed by Allied Works. The addition will add dedicated spaces including a teen zone, children's areas, a STEAM room, and a community room, along with a fully ADA-compliant entrance and modernized HVAC, plumbing, and lighting systems. The renovated building is targeting LEED Silver certification.

The project is funded jointly by the Mayor's Office, the City Council, the Brooklyn Borough President, and the state Assembly, and is the first of three Brooklyn and Bronx civic projects Allied Works is undertaking with the DDC. During construction, library services will continue at a temporary Crown Heights location this fall.
